Valley Center Municipal Water District
Valley Center Municipal Water District is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Landscape Maintenance Worker I – III. Incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of perform duties related to landscaping, including designing and maintaining irrigation systems; may also be required to work in wastewater facilities to include collection, distribution, and reclamation.
KEY DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Trims, edges, rakes, fertilizes, and waters a variety of ground cover and other areas; weeds, prunes, mulches and sprays trees, plants, and shrubbery. Mixes herbicides to control the growth of vegetation on and around flood control and water distribution facilities and rights-of-way following specific directions; operates truck-mounted or individual spray units to apply chemicals in designated locations. Operates a variety of hand and power garden tools and equipment including, but not limited to, small tractors, generators, weed cutters and chippers, spreaders, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other tools; drivers a variety of trucks and other vehicles.
Inspects assigned areas, corrects and/or reports safety hazards; cleans and maintains grounds; clears brush, weeds, and debris from ground and open areas; maintains landscaped areas in an attractive condition; prepares soil and plants new landscaping according to a defined plan; removes overhanging branches or downed trees. Knowledge of: Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees; use and care of common hand tools; basic arithmetic, including proportions and volume; use and application of a variety of herbicides for vegetation control; principles and practices of landscape maintenance, including pruning and plant care; operation and minor maintenance of various vehicles and equipment used in grounds maintenance work; basic first aid and CPR techniques; safety precautions pertaining to the work, including proper handling of hazardous chemicals; and, practices and procedures of general maintenance work.
Ability to: Monitor the work of subordinate staff; train lower level employees on work methods and procedures; use landscaping tools and equipment; complete forms and maintain accurate records; perform varied vegetation control and landscape maintenance work in a safe, efficient manner; perform a variety of grounds maintenance and vegetation control activities; follow oral and written directions; understand oral communication and be understood while using the District’s radio communication system; and, establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and those contacted in the course of the work.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Education: All Classes: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.
Experience: Landscape Maintenance Worker I- a minimum of six months of grounds keeping experience.
Landscape Maintenance Worker II- a minimum of two years landscaping experience to include design and installation of irrigation systems and pruning techniques.
Landscape Maintenance Worker III- a minimum of two years of experience as a Landscape Maintenance Worker II, or its equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
License and Certifications: All Classes- California Class C Driver’s License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to use hands and fingers to grasp and feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is regularly required to talk, hear, pull, push, walk, stand, crouch, kneel and stoop. The incumbent is occasionally required to balance and climb. The incumbent must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include those required for those who operate cars and trucks. May be required to medically qualify and wear a District approved respirator.
The incumbent regularly works in outside weather conditions including cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather, wet and/or humid conditions; may work on slippery or uneven surfaces; possible exposure to fumes or airborne particles, sewage, or toxic or caustic chemicals; regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; the noise level will range from moderate to very loud.
