JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Customer Service Supervisor, this position reads meters on designated routes and performs related tasks.  Meter Reader Trainee shall apply all standard safety practices while performing work.  Meter Reader Trainee may be promoted to Meter Reader once proficient in all duties of meter reading.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.         Performs meter reads throughout the District and records readings in a hand-held computer.  Notes irregularities (such as high usage or leaks).

2.         Reports meter-related problems.

3.         Assists with field investigations when assigned.

4.         Assists in planning meter route changes, and provides and maintains current meter location instructions for other District personnel.

5.         Performs meter turn-ons and turn-offs as assigned.

6.         Assists with performing minor field repairs and replacing meters and/or related equipment as required.

7.         Engages in weed abatement and other route “grooming” activities.

8.         Performs related work as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. This is an entry-level position.

Must have a valid California driver’s license and be acceptable to the District’s automobile insurance carriers.

Must establish and maintain effective working relations with other District personnel and promote good relations with the public.

 

MUST DEMONSTRATE SKILLS NECESSARY TO:

Use a hand held computer and personal computer in a networked environment;

·         Read, understand and apply simple written information.

·         Walk for long distances.

·         Read, and record numbers accurately.

·         Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;

·         Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

·         Establish and maintain effective working relations with other District personnel, and agencies, and promote good relations with the public.

·         Speak, write and read the English language.
