About San Diego Water Works

San Diego Water Works is a regional consortium of 22 water and wastewater member agencies working together with local educational institutions to ensure that the San Diego region will have the workforce to fill mission critical positions in the water industry.

Who are we: The Water Authority’s mission is to provide a safe and reliable supply of water to its member agencies serving the San Diego region. As the wholesaler to the region, Water Authority staff facilitate the development and outreach of San Diego Water Works.

Why: Water agencies in the San Diego region are facing a critical need: 30-50% of the current workforce is eligible to retire in the next 10-15 years and water agencies recognize the need for a consolidated effort to ensure there is a sufficient pipeline of available talent for water industry careers.

A taskforce of General Managers from various agencies have led the way to establish San Diego Water Works with the mission to coordinate education and training programs and improve outreach in water industry careers.

Goal of San Diego Water Works: Ensure a safe and reliable supply of water to the San Diego region with a high-performing workforce.

Objectives:

1. Support water agencies in the San Diego region through consolidated outreach and resources.
2. Develop qualified candidates for mission critical positions in the water industry through consolidated recruitment and outreach.
3. Build awareness of the water industry through outreach to high schools and K-12.
4. Recruit and support veterans and transitioning military through internships, cooperative work experiences, and other resources.
