GIS Specialist

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of analysis in the design, implementation, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS); performs updates of GIS applications, and supporting software or web applications; performs technical GIS duties; performs related duties as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This single incumbent classification is responsible for analyzing processes and output of Geographical Information System databases for engineering, water/wastewater operations, and related documents.  This class is distinguished from the GIS/CADD Technician, which is responsible for technical GIS engineering support duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

The GIS Specialist is a member of the Asset Management department, a subdivision of Engineering.  It is supervised by the Asset Management Supervisor.  The GIS Specialist does not supervise staff but may provide technical direction to the GIS/CADD Technician, as necessary and directed by the Asset Management Supervisor.
