SCADA Specialist

Security and monitoring are significant issues in the water industry and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems is a distributed computer system used by operations and management to view the entire process and perform control actions. Specialists monitor network equipment for performance, identify potential security issues, ensure the SCADA system reacts to conditions and performs control actions to isolate any issues.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of operational characteristics of water systems;
  • Principles and practices of SCADA systems;
  • Principles of electrical theory; operating characteristics of electronic equipment including PLCs, radios, routers, switches, modem, and security cameras; instrumentation and process control principles and practices; computer systems and applicable software applications including configuration, programming, troubleshooting, and support of SCADA software; and
  • Methods and techniques for installation, configuration, and operation on network systems and equipment.
  • Ability to install, configure, program, maintain, and troubleshoot SCADA network hardware, software, and connectivity issues;
  • Troubleshoot and maintain radio networks and other telecommunications systems; and
  • Use of diagnostic instruments to test, calibrate, and repair complex SCADA and instrumentation equipment.

Experience Requirements

  • Typical experience requirements include the equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by three years of experience in SCADA troubleshooting and programming. A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field is often desirable but not required for entry level positions.
